VPK Newsletter - Week of February 28, 2011

Looking Back:

We finished up our unit on teeth and made giant sponge-painted toothbrushes. Check out the display in our classroom and see what we've learned! Our letter focus for the week was Uu. We made umbrellas using a straw painting technique. In Ms. Pat's music class we are continuing our trip around the world. The children "visited" Africa, coloring flags, making and playing their own rain sticks, and learning several new dances and songs.

The Week Ahead:

This week we celebrate Read Across America and the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Parents/grandparents are encouraged to sign up to come in and read to the class this week. You may bring something to read or we'll give you a book to read. If you'd like, you may wish to donate the book that you read to our class library for the children to enjoy. If you'd like to participate, please see a staff member to sign up.

Thursday is Pajama Day! Your child may wear his/her pajamas to school for the day!!!

Friday is Picture Day.

Outdoor Fun

Everything is a little bit better when you can do it outside! Today we set up an outdoor art studio and art gallery for VPK. We learned about color mixing as we created pink and purple and had fun making beautiful paintings. Added bonus: the sun helped everything dry really quickly!

Friendship Hearts

If we catch a student being a good friend, the class earns a heart and it goes into a bowl. When the bowl fills up with 100 hearts, the class earns a popsicle party. We are working on being kind, caring, sharing, and helpful. Please reinforce these skills at home.

Change of Clothes

Please make sure that your child has a change of clothes at school in case of an accident.

Keep Toys at Home

Please keep all toys at home unless it is your child's turn for Show & Tell.

Jesse Bear and Show & Tell

Jesse Bear will go home with Mateo this week. Marin and Mason can bring something to share on Friday.

A Special Thank You:

Thank you to Mrs. Drake (Melissa and Jennifer's mom) for donating all of the great Valentine's Day supplies. The VPK class has been busy at the art table making beautiful valentines!

Valentine's Day Party:

We will celebrate with a pizza party on Monday, February 14. We'll exchange valentine cards at the party. Each child should bring 17 cards with his/her name on them. Please don't address the cards as this slows down the passing out process! A $2 donation for the party can be sent in anytime this week.

What Makes a Good Friend?

The VPK class has been learning about friendship and how to be a good friend. Last week we made a friendship poster with photos of the children playing and learning together. Each child dictated how he/she is a good friend. Extend this lesson at home by asking your child how he/she was a good friend at school today! :)

Music With Ms. Pat - "Around the World"

We've started a new unit with Ms. Pat in our Wednesday music class. Ms. Pat introduced us to a little geography today as we began our exploration with the United States. We looked at different regions on the map and on a globe and then we danced and sang songs from the west, the north-east, Florida, Louisiana, and Hawaii! Ms. Pat is planning to take us around the world with music and dance!!!
